MRI-guided PRT in Kaltenkirchen

Radiating pain may be related to an irritated nerve root. Periradicular therapy, or PRT, is a targeted injection near a nerve root. At Universal Spine, we discuss whether MRI-guided treatment is suitable for you.

What does MRI-guided mean?

Magnetic resonance imaging supports orientation and monitoring during treatment. It does not use X-rays. Suitability for MRI is checked beforehand, including in patients with implants or certain medical devices.

When may PRT be considered?

PRT may be considered for selected symptoms caused by nerve root irritation, for example in connection with a herniated disc. The examination and whether your symptoms match the imaging findings are important. An injection is not suitable for every type of back pain.

What happens during treatment?

First, we discuss your symptoms, medications and existing scans. After an explanation and your consent, treatment is performed under sterile conditions with imaging guidance. You then remain in the practice for observation. Individual instructions for the time afterwards are provided before the procedure.

Benefits and limitations

The aim is to reduce pain and irritation around the affected nerve root. The effect varies and may be temporary. An injection does not remove a mechanical narrowing and does not replace urgently needed surgery.

Risks and preparation

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, allergic reactions and nerve injury. Please tell us about blood thinners, allergies and implants. Do not stop medications on your own. Arrange your journey home according to our individual instructions.

Other injections and appointments

Depending on the findings, we also advise on facet joint and sacroiliac joint injections. Appointments are arranged through Open MRI Kaltenkirchen, Werner-von-Siemens-Straße 22A, 24568 Kaltenkirchen.
